Pancreatic cancer is a highly aggressive disease, often diagnosed at a late stage when treatment options are limited. Fortunately, a new blood test called a liquid biopsy shows promise in detecting pancreatic cancer at an early stage, when the cancer is more treatable.

Early Detection is Critical for Pancreatic Cancer

Pancreatic cancer is difficult to detect because it doesn’t cause symptoms until the cancer has grown large enough to spread to other organs. By the time symptoms appear, the cancer is often in an advanced stage and difficult to treat.

Early detection is crucial for improving survival rates in pancreatic cancer. When pancreatic cancer is detected early, the five-year survival rate is about 30%. However, when the cancer is diagnosed at a late stage, the five-year survival rate is only 3%.

New Liquid Biopsy Test Shows Promise for Early Detection

The National Cancer Institute of the NIH reported that a new blood test called a liquid biopsy shows promise in detecting pancreatic cancer at an early stage. The test analyzes microRNAs, which are small molecules released by tumors.

In a study of nearly 1,000 people, the liquid biopsy test was able to accurately detect early-stage pancreatic cancer in 91% of cases. The test may be even more accurate when combined with a protein test called CA19-9.

More studies are needed before the liquid biopsy test can be used routinely. However, the test represents a significant step forward in the fight against pancreatic cancer.
