New research brings encouraging news for those looking to reduce their cancer risk. A large study conducted by researchers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the University of Oxford has found a significant link between daily physical activity, even at light intensities, and a lower risk of cancer.
Published in the prestigious British Journal of Sports Medicine, the study followed over 85,000 adults and tracked their daily activity levels using wrist-worn devices for a week. Over an average follow-up period of almost six years, the researchers observed which participants developed cancer.
The findings revealed that individuals with the highest total amount of daily physical activity had a remarkable 26% lower risk of developing cancer compared to those with the lowest activity levels. Importantly, the study highlighted that even light-intensity activities, such as casual walking, shopping, and household chores, contributed to this reduced risk. Moderate-to-vigorous activities also showed a similar benefit.
Interestingly, the number of steps taken each day appeared to play a more significant role in lowering cancer risk than the intensity of the activity. The study found that taking 7,000 steps per day was associated with an 11% lower cancer risk, and taking 9,000 steps per day was linked to a 16% lower risk compared to taking just 5,000 steps. The reduction in risk seemed to level off after around 9,000 steps.

While sedentary behavior alone wasn’t directly linked to cancer risk in this study, the researchers noted that replacing sedentary time with any form of physical activity did contribute to lower risk levels.
